What is Oxegen AKG? In order to explain Oxegen AKG, we must first begin with L-Arginine, a dietary supplement which has typically been used to stimulate the production of nitric oxide in the body.* The problem, however, is during the digestive process L-Arginine (a positively charged amino acid) will bind with any negatively charged amino acid – resulting in portions of L-Arginine correctly binding with Glutamate (a negatively charged amino acid, which stimulates nitric oxide production), while other portions incorrectly bind with different elements, leading to either (i) the beneficial intent of L-Arginine being lost, or (ii) the creation of a free-radical (which is damaging to the body).*
It is for this reason that Oxegen AKG utilizes Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG) instead of simple L-Arginine. Oxegen AKG mimics the biomolecular, physiological and chemical reaction your body naturally goes through during the L-Arginine/nitric oxide conversion process, resulting in a single target-specific formula with just one task – producing nitric oxide.* But before nitric oxide production can occur, Oxegen AKG must arrive in the small intestine (lower GI) intact.
In order to ensure Oxegen AKG survives the harsh environment of the stomach and arrives in the small intestine intact – ready for absorption via the villi (tiny hair-like projections) which take up nutrients – Oxegen AKG utilizes SurSorb Sustained Release Technology (SRT). For simplicity purposes, think of the villi as being "coded" (like a lock), absorbing only certain nutrients (which hold the key). Without the correct key, the villi will not initiate absorption. Oxegen AKG is formulated with a transfer enzyme which unlocks the villi key (allowing absorption) and triggers Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (eNOS) – the enzyme which stimulates the natural production of nitric oxide.
As nitric oxide levels increase, nitro vasodilation (the widening of blood vessels) occurs and greater blood flow, nutrients, amino acids, and oxygen are delivered throughout the body and into the cells. The nitro vasodilator benefits of nitric oxide on smooth muscle cells have been demonstrated in controlled clinical trials. One such trial evaluated the contribution of nitric oxide to metabolic coronary vasodilatation in the human heart. Results showed both a (i) 50% increase in blood flow and (ii) 68% reduction in coronary vascular resistance.1
In addition to vasodilatation, a secondary benefit of nitric oxide is its ability to act as its own self-defense mechanism, lubricating the endothelial lining of blood vessels like Teflon – keeping things from sticking to the blood vessel wall.2 Thus, the presence of nitric oxide itself not only exhibits vasodilation, but further aids in the lubrication of endothelial blood vessel walls.2
Studies have further shown endothelium-dependent vasodilation may become impaired by the presence of oxygen free radicals – inactivating or degrading intracellular availability of L-Arginine, the precursor of Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS).3 It is for this reason Oxegen AKG is formulated with Vitamin C (as calcium ascorbate) to help deliver both sustained delivery of powerful antioxidants and greater bioavailability, while helping to ensure less stomach upset for individuals sensitive to Vitamin C4
