Did you know that a fresh-crushed clove of garlic is more powerful than all garlic supplements except Alli-C?

That's right, because fresh crushed garlic cloves mix an enzyme called allinase with allian to produce allicin - the primary active ingredient in garlic. Garlic supplements only pretend to do this. They call it allicin-potential. The garlic supplement companies (yes, all those famous brands sold by TV news anchors and celebrities - the brands that start with letters K, G, and P) really have little or no allicin in them at all. The labels on the garlic supplement packages say the products have the potential to produce allicin, but do they really deliver any allicin?

There is little to zero allicin in other garlic supplements, just the ingredients that might produce allicin. If the environment in the gastric tract is perfect, a small amount of allicin might be produced after taking a garlic capsule. Chemically, allicin is known as 2-propene-1-sulfinothioc acid S-2-propenyl ester; thio-2-propene-1-sulfinic acid S-allyl ester.2. Allicin is produced by an enzymatic reaction when raw garlic is either crushed or somehow injured. The enzyme, alliinase, stored in a separate compartment in garlic, combines with a compound called alliin in raw garlic and produces allicin.

Garlic extracts traditionally have been used to help improve circulation. It is thought that allicin is garlic's key component involved in the vasodilation of the small capillaries and alveoli in the lungs. Taking up to three allicin powder capsules per day should help improve circulation and breathing capacity. Allicin powder has been used successfully on volunteers as young as seven. Since asthma is an allergic condition, the allicin should help control the immune system and, thereby alleviate some of the symptoms.

ATHLETE'S FOOT
Break open a capsule of allicin powder, and dissolve it in about 20 ml. of water. Soak a cotton pad in the liquid. Bathe the afflicted area with the soaked cotton pad. Repeat this process a few times per day for up to seven days. Your problem should clear within a week. Mr. C. G. from East Sussex, UK, states: "Diluting allicin powder and using it on my recurrent athlete's foot problem has really worked. It does not dry out the skin and, therefore, [it] prevents painful cracking."

BACTERIA
Many types of bacteria, especially those that infect the throat, ear, and chest, are sensitive to allicin. Allicin also has been shown to kill E. Coli and Helicobacter pylori in the gastrointestinal tract. Helicobacter pylori is known to be the cause of the majority of stomach ulcers, and treatment requires triple antibiotic combination therapy. "Take just three capsules of allicin powder per day for three weeks, and the bacterium will never return," according to Mr. J. H. from Bexhill-on-Sea, UK.

CANCER
Recently, researchers in Pennsylvania have shown that by injecting a compound called diallyl disulphide (formed when allicin breaks down in the stomach), tumors can be reduced by half. Another garlic compound (S-allylcysteine) can stop cancer causing agents from binding to human breast cells. Allicin breaks down in the body to form diallyl disulphide. In America, population studies have shown an inverse association between vegetable and fruit consumption and colon cancer risk. Few of these studies have focused on women, but in Iowa a large group of 41,837 women, aged 55-69 years, were monitored for cancer incidence for five years via the State Health Registry. The results showed that consumption of garlic was inversely associated with risk of developing colon cancer.

CHOLESTEROL
Medical researchers in America and Oxford, UK, recently stated that garlic supplements have an important part to play in the treatment of high cholesterol. Overall, a 12% reduction in total cholesterol can be expected. The reduction normally will be evident after only four weeks of treatment. Mr. S. However a recent study at The Royal United Hospital Bath and The Royal South Hampshire Hospital in Southampton, has shown that allicin can have a beneficial effect on harmful blood fats.

DIGESTION
Allicin can remove various poisons, which are secreted by bacteria. It is particularly effective against Escherichia coli-related poisons, which can cause stomach upsets. Interestingly, garlic is the only antibiotic, which also encourages digestion and protects the body against poisons produced by the infection. Furthermore, allicin is unlikely to have any detrimental effect on good stomach bacteria.

EYES
The bacteria responsible for a common eye infection are well known. Concern is growing about the number of resistant strains of bacteria developing.
